And we never used protection. I was like, 'Protection? Shit, I'm in love. What for?' I had heard about HIV, but that was for the older gay men. I couldn't get it. I never even thought about it.

James
July 10, 1995
His Apartment (same as Tapestry’s) Lower Haight

MW: When you sat at that table for six months, what did you write about?

James: I'll give you a little example here. It's a poem called Little Stream:

When I'm looking for a love, pure and genuine
The smallest creeks and streams I search to
Find.
For when I look into a mighty river
The words I hear are not too calm.
The smallest ripples flow with the biggest of
Heart.
No need for the giant waves whirling me from
The stars.
I can reach out my hand for a touch in return
On the sands of the little stream, I don't
Reach far.

The Mississippi is a big river. They call it the Mighty Mississippi. But sometimes you have to go to the little streams to find what you're looking for.

MW: So, do you mind if we go back to Andy? How did you find out that he was positive?

James: I found his AZT. Eventually we talked about it and, you know, I cried, and he cried, and all that stuff. I promised I would never leave him. I'm sure he infected me. The one thing that I've learned is HIV is not hard to get, but it's not easy either. And we never used protection. I was like, "Protection? Shit, I'm in love. What for?" I had heard about HIV, but that was for the older gay men. I couldn't get it. I never even thought about it.
